Metadata API
The Metadata API delivers detailed metadata for a specific title, including its name, author, genre, synopsis, reviews, and more. This metadata is provided by the title's publisher, and not all titles will have data for every metadata field.
You can use the data from the Metadata API to display specific information on a title or to generate custom lists based on specific factors, such as notable reviewers (e.g., The New York Times).
Note: The examples below show our production API URL. If you're using our integration environment, use https://integration.api.overdrive.com or https://integration-patron.api.overdrive.com.
Using the Metadata API
You can navigate to a title's metadata by following the hypermedia links from the Search API.
The Metadata API accepts either a reserveId or crossRefId (also called a titleId). The reserveId value is not case-sensitive.

- Details about the title, such as the author, language, subjects, and reviews. These details are provided by the publisher.
- A shareInLibby link that shows the availability of the title at nearby libraries.
- The format (or formats) the title is offered in.
- A link to a sample of the title (available for most titles). The sample may be listed multiple times if the title has multiple formats.
Preorder titles
The only difference between ready-to-circulate titles and preorder titles in the Metadata response is the onSaleDate. For a preorder title, the onSaleDate will show a future date. Preorders can't be borrowed, but users can search for and place holds on them.
Note: Publishers control the onSaleDate, so it may change without warning.
Titles that are no longer in circulation
When a title is no longer in circulation (e.g., it's expired or weeded from a collection), it will still appear in Metadata responses. It will have isOwnedByCollections: false at the top of the response.
If you plan to hide both expired and weeded titles from your product, you can filter based on this Metadata field. If you plan to only hide weeded titles, see this FAQ for more details.
Making a bulk metadata call
You can use this endpoint to get metadata for up to 50 titles at once by supplying the reserveId or crossRefId for each one. These values can be passed using the parameter name "reserveIds" or "products."
For this endpoint, all titles need to be in the collection. If you provide IDs for titles that aren't in the collection, no metadata will be returned and the totalItems won't match the number you requested.
