TermDefinition
AdvantageAn OverDrive program that allows individual members of a consortium to purchase titles specifically for their users. These titles are available in addition to the titles in the consortium.
Advantage account IDThe identifier for an Advantage account within a consortium. You can use "advantageAccount" hypermedia links from the Library Account API to access Advantage-only titles or a full collection with both Advantage and base consortium titles.
Advantage sharingWhen a member of a consortium purchases a title for their Advantage collection, then chooses to share access to that title with the rest of the consortium. Shared titles appear in the Library Availability API v2. (This functionality is also referred to as “Advantage Plus.”)
AvailabilityThe status of a title and what action can be taken on it (i.e., whether a title can be borrowed or placed on hold). You can determine this information, along with number of copies, number of holds, and number of checkouts, via the Library Availability API.
Collection tokenThe unique identifier for a library or school that’s used throughout the OverDrive APIs (retrieved in the Library Account API using a library ID). One library or school may have several collection tokens that include different subsets of their OverDrive catalog: the base consortium collection, base + Advantage titles, or Advantage-only titles.
ConsortiumThe main collection of titles (i.e., products) available to a library or school. This excludes Advantage titles.
CrossRefIdA numeric identifier for an OverDrive title. You can use this ID to get information about titles from the OverDrive APIs, perform actions on them, or create a permanent link to a title in a library or school collection or on overdrive.com. Also referred to as titleId.
Curated listA list of titles that’s hand-selected by a library or school—often with a unifying theme, like cozy mysteries or holiday cookies—and appears on their library website, Libby, or Sora.
Digital collectionThe catalog of titles a library or school offers through OverDrive.
FormatsThe download file or reading/listening option for a borrowed title. Example: Kindle Book. Learn more about formats.
HoldsA title that a user is waiting for. When all copies of a title are checked out, the user can join a wait list. The title becomes available to the first person on the wait list when a copy gets returned.
Lending modelsThe set of purchasing and borrowing terms for digital content, determined by the publisher. OverDrive offers several lending models to libraries and schools to accommodate different budgets and use-cases. Learn more about lending models.
Library IDThe unique number that identifies a specific library or school. It’s used in the Library Account API to retrieve important account information, like the collection token, products link, Advantage account links, and more.
LoanA title that’s checked out to a user.
MARC (Machine-readable cataloging) recordsThe industry-standard files used by libraries and schools to catalog their (physical and digital) collections. These records include basic metadata (like the title’s name, author, etc.) and, for OverDrive titles, links to the title on their OverDrive website.
MetadataThe information that describes a particular title (i.e., product) in the OverDrive APIs. This includes the title’s name, author, summary, and more.
PreorderA title that’s been purchased by a library or school but can’t circulate yet because it hasn’t been widely released to the public. Its onSaleDate in the Metadata response signifies when users can start borrowing the title. Before the title is released, users can discover a preorder and place it on hold.
ProductAn individual title (an ebook, audiobook, or magazine) in a library or school’s collection.
Products linkThe URL (retrieved from the Library Account API) that lists all titles associated with a library or school’s collection token. The products link is the foundation of the Search API.
Reserve IDAn alphanumeric identifier for OverDrive titles. You can use this ID in calls to the OverDrive APIs to get information about the title or act on it.
Suspended holdA hold (i.e., a copy of a title that a user is waiting for) that the user has deferred. When a hold is suspended, the user will continue moving up the wait list, but won’t get the copy until they remove the suspension and the title becomes available.
TitleIdA numeric identifier for an OverDrive title. You can use this ID to get information about titles from the OverDrive APIs, perform actions on them, or create a permanent link to a title in a library or school collection or on overdrive.com. Also referred to as crossRefId.
Weeded titleA title that’s been removed from a collection by the library or school, often because the title is expired, outdated, or no longer fits their collection development policies.
